Building Bridges Between Imagination & Healing: A LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® Approach to Trauma Play Therapy

  • Althea T. Simpson, LCSW, RPT-S™
  • Live Webinar Specialized CE Hours: 3
  • CE Classification: 2 Hours – Skills & Methods;1-Hour Theory or 3-Hours Special Topics

LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® integrated into trauma play therapy offers clients a powerful way to express and process distressing and traumatic experiences through 3-D visual metaphors. This session, grounded in the complementary principles of Gestalt theory and liminal spaces, will guide mental health professionals in using experiential and metaphorical techniques in play therapy practice to help clients navigate trauma, build resilience, and move through transitional, often challenging phases of their lives. By using LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® in play therapy sessions, clients can externalize trauma, gain insight into their personal narratives, and engage more deeply in the healing process. The Gestalt theory focuses on the “here-and-now” experience, combined with the exploration of liminal spaces, those uncertain moments between the past and future, and serves as a foundation for facilitating meaningful client breakthroughs.

After attending this session, participants will be able to…

  1. Describe the core principles of the LEGO SERIOUS PLAY® methodology and how it can be applied as a therapeutic tool in trauma play therapy, helping clients externalize trauma and process complex emotions.
  2. Demonstrate how to integrate Gestalt theory’s focus on the present moment and self-awareness into play therapy sessions, using play and liminal spaces to deepen clients’ connections to their thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations during trauma work.
  3. Facilitate constructing 3-D models as visual metaphors for their trauma experiences, allowing clients to externalize, articulate, and reframe their trauma narratives in a safe and controlled manner.
